Together we will discuss alternative structures, tools, mechanics, ingredients and water sources to assemble and execute a lush floral installation featuring seasonal blooms and zero floral foam. Professional photographs will be taken throughout the day which you will be gifted to use throughout your portfolio, website and social media. After flowering we will enjoy a delicious banquet lunch together before gathering up the abundant florals to take home. All floral tools and supplies will be included as well as a few surprise gifts for you. You will walk away with your arms full of flowers and your brains buzzing with confidence. Hey Flower Lovers!
I'm Ash, the owner and head designer of Film and Foliage. I live and breathe floral design.
When I first began my flower journey I signed up for TAFE ready to be filled with floral knowledge and fancy skills (head full of fancy and all that) and as you may have already guessed, formal floristry education taught us to use Oasis Floral Foam exclusively for any and all designs.
The handling of these green bricks came with a multitude of safety instructions and warnings prompting me to question what alternatives were on offer. Frustrated with the response I completed my certificate but began deeply researching this toxic brick after my classes.
Fast forward to running a wedding flower biz and using floral foam for all of my installations I had a realisation that I was destroying the earth that my flowers needed to grow. I began slowly testing and trialling different mechanics and going back to the old techniques practised by the florists from the golden age before foam was invented. It was a rocky start but over time I refined and perfected my processes and was pleasantly surprised by the new design style I could achieve and the long-term savings re-usable mechanics offer.
As any born-again florist does I began preaching to everyone about the dangers of satan (foam) but soon realised from the eye rolls that I was just as annoying as a self-righteous vegan (I was also vegan haha!) ranting about animal rights. I calmed down a little and instead started sharing the BTS of my mechanics and the lush results you can achieve.
Earth Conscious Floral Designers from all over the world began messaging me, keen to learn more and desperate for in-depth tutorials to allow them to also make the transition to a smaller footprint and greener business.
So, here I am, FINALLY, giving the Flower Lovers what they want! Join me as we unpack the many fails and lessons I've learnt (so that you don't have to), the materials and techniques I live by and the processes and ingredients that will change your designs and life.
